“Earth Boxes: Sustainable Food Production for All”

3:00–4:30 pm, Lake Chapala Society, Back Patio

Together with his partners, Robert Patterson operates EarthBox Mexico, a social enterprise dedicated to reintroducing sustainable food production to families, schools and institutions across Mexico. The EarthBox, their principal product, is entirely "localized" in terms of inputs, and uses 60-80% less water than conventional farming/gardening.

EarthBox Mexico teaches and helps families and institutions build highly productive, space/water/labor efficient food-growing systems all across Mexico.

Following a thirty-plus year career with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Robert moved to Mexico to operate EarthBox Mexico.

Ana Luz Zepeda

“Your Right and Your Responsibility to Know What You Eat”

As we know, the statements "We are what we eat" and "Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food" are both true. The most useful way to approach knowing what you eat is to learn who and what are involved in the process of bringing your food to the table. Best, of course, are the natural processes of fertilization, pest control, and moon harvest used by a small, local producers—they bring all the the goodness of the garden to us. And this could be the first step toward a new consciousness, giving, in part, an answer to the ancient question. “Who am I?”

Ana Luz Zepeda, Founder of Nutrorganik, which provides vermicompost, derived from organic and garden waste converted by earthworms. (Nutrorganik is a lovely green place, located in in El Salto, Jalisco.) Ten years of experience in this activity have made Ana Luz a passionate advocate of recovering the soil’s natural fertility.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT—Lakeside cleanup

Help us beautify the lake shore!

Greetings Green Groupers.  We have a special event happening this Saturday and we need your help.  About 500 students from Guadalajara are arriving by bus in Chapala for their semi-annual Trash Collection volunteer efforts.  Twice a year these students come to the Lakeside area to pick up trash along the shoreline.  Imagine 500 highly enthusiastic and energetic kids wanting to do good things for the environment.  We need your help to coordinate and organize these kids.  It is not going to be difficult and you don't need to speak Spanish, we just need your direction and coordination.

Please meet us at the Old Train Station in Chapala at 8:00 on Saturday, December 1.  The kids arrive shortly thereafter and off we go to clean miles of the shoreline.  Lunch is provided afterwards.

Hope to see you there.

“Solar Technology for All”

Speaker: Iván Tamez

Tuesday, November 6, 2012

Mexico’s energy future lies in harnessing its greatest natural resource— abundant sunshine. Ajijic and associated Lakeside communities are said to have the largest per capita solar installed base in Mexico*. STI Solar Technology is one of the providers that have contributed to making it so.

Iván Tamez, founder of STI, will describe the varieties, advantages and savings of solar tech and will answer your practical questions. Also hear his story of how, as an offshoot of a model home decorating business, 3000 new homes were equipped with solar water heating, and a new enterprise began that now installs solar systems and distributes solar products throughout Mexico.

“Aquaponics: Growing Fish and Produce Together”

Tuesday, October 2, 2012

Speaker: Greg Ochs

We’re emptying our seas of fish and poisoning the land with chemicals. Aquaponics overcomes both problems by growing fish and plants together, without soil, and with superb water conservation. Aquaponics is always organic.

Years of engineering experience, in both energy solar and food production, gave Greg Ochs the background, his passion for issues of sustainability provided the motivation, and this past year and a half of hands-on experimentation with a custom made aquaponics greenhouse have earned Greg lots of knowledge to share about this exciting green technology. Join us for pleasant learning and (re)connect with other “Greens.”
