Lake Chapala Green Group May 1, 2012 Meeting

Grow your own Moringa Trees
for Nutrition and Medicine

Speakers: Lau'ana Lei and Barbara Schermer

Tuesday May 1, 2012. 3:00–4:30 PM
Lake Chapala Society, Back Patio

Last Green Group Meeting until September!

The Moringa is known as the most nutritious tree on the planet and is traditionally said to be a medicine for as many as 300 diseases. Originating in India, the plant offers seven times more Vitamin C than oranges, twice the protein and four times the calcium of milk, three times the potassium of bananas… and more! The moringa is known as the “Miracle Tree.” It could be an important nutritional source for villagers all over Mexico.

Lau’ana, Barbara, and other enthusiastic volunteers have been proving that moringas grow wonderfully well at Lakeside, and they will teach you how to grow them too.

LCS will be open on the Tuesday holiday for this event only!

Lau'ana Lei is a published free lance writer on issues of health and the environment. She has also developed, manufactured and marketed products for natural healing. For more about moringas, see www.moringatreemx.info.

Barbara Schermer is an internationally known astrologer. See www.astrologyalive.com.

The New “Lake Chapala Seed Network”

Speaker: Alicia Chávez

April 3, 2012 at 3:00 pm

Lake Chapala Society, Back Patio

Many Lakesiders save vegetable seeds and may even trade with others now and then when they can find them. The Lake Chapala Seed Network will provide an organized system to make seed savers known to one another and will promote seed keeping and exchange for all. Beyond that, the newly forming group seeks to develop a low-tech but effective seed bank to provide insurance against disaster. Workshops on seed producing and storage, contribution to a regional seed collective, and a semiannual “Seed Exchange Fest” are part of the vision. Alicia Chávez will explain it all. Come be a part of this adventure!

Alicia Chávez is no stranger to organizing, having facilitated the establishment of “La Huerta de acá” organic garden with the women growers of the former ACÁ Organic Farm.

The New Sustainable Cohousing Village

Speaker: Rick Cowlishaw

January 3, 2012, 3pm

Lake Chapala Society, Back Patio

Join us for the first Lake Chapala Green Group meeting of 2012. Rick Cowlishaw, architect and LCGG Steering Committee member, will describe the new gated community and sustainable cohousing village being created just west of Ajijic. Soon the Lake Chapala area will have a new kind of place to retire, Rancho La Salud Village.

This community will be the first Cohousing community in Mexico, and one of the most comprehensive. An adult cooperative neighborhood of 21 homes and 8 residential suites will concentrate on sustainability (total on-site energy and water generation, on-site disposal of water and waste, organically growing our own food), senior health (following AARP guidelines), adult learning, and Universal Design.

The land is purchased, the common house is built, and the lots are approved. The next step? Forming a community with the people who will live here.

Lake Chapala Green Group Meeting, September 6, 2011

Hi, there, Green Group-ers,

We're baaack!  Its been a long hot summer for most of us, and we look forward to cooler weather, and the return to the Lake Chapala Green Group lecture series.  After three months off, we are resuming our popular monthly program of interesting and important sustainable living topics for the lakeside community.

Our first meeting of the season is Tuesday, September 6th, at 3:00 pm on the back patio at LCS.  Our speaker is Aurora Michel Galindo.  You may know Aurora from her executive position at Actinver, or as one of the strongest activists of our lakeside community.  She brings a lifetime of practical experience on how to live sustainably.  She recalls that as a child, the family garden helped to feed a family of 10 children.   Even in hard times, there was enough food.

Aurora will have a wonderful presentation, telling us about a couple of community programs, including a major reforestation project by local youth, and a new community-based water purification project in Tlachichilco.  Aurora's message will offer insights on how the foreign community can successfully invest our resources and energies in helping to develop strong bonds with our neighbors.

Hope to see you all there.

Lake Chapala Green Group Ends Season

Lake Chapala Green Group

The 2010-2011 season of the Lake Chapala Green Group speakers meetings came to an end on May 3rd. The popular monthly events are expected to resume on September 6, 2011, on the usual first Tuesdays of each month, at 3:00pm, on the back patio at LCS.

The program, organized by the steering group of LCGG, provided a year of superb presenters and stimulating topics ranging across the territory covered by the term “Sustainability.” Thanks go out again to the speakers and to our Green Group supporters who turned out in substantial numbers at each gathering. (I think you will forgive us on the steering committee for being just a little bit proud of the year’s accomplishments.)

If you missed a meeting or two, you may catch up on the lakechapalagreengroup.com website on the LCGG Community Speakers page, where you will find streaming audio of each presentation, photos, and other supportive materials.

Have a great summer!
